Kirsi Kivivirta’s "Waters" continues her series of monochromatic mosaic works, the first of which she created as early as 1998. These rhythmical works mounted on walls are composed of hundreds of pieces of different sizes. Kivivirta’s main material is white porcelain. I work clay by rolling it and cutting it into pieces, and I draw with a knife. I have developed my own abstract method of cutting clay.
My work is a kind of composition process, moving pieces around, in which various elements look for their own places and their dynamics. My intention is also to reduce or eliminate factors and so to express the essential.
Kivivirta’s work process is always affected by the interior space, housing area or other environment where the finished work will be placed, as seen, for example in Waters -series of six works in a hospital. Water has a healing effect. Her mosaic pieces can also include visual elements tied to a place. If I don’t know the placement of the work when I’m building it, I envision a place. This is necessary for me to proceed. Places, things and forms on a monumental scale are inspiring, and so are monochromatic qualities, continuity and repetition of a certain kind. The same applies to inspiring musical works.

Palapelimäisten seinäteosteni pääasiallinen materiaali on kuvataiteessa harvinainen posliini, mikä edustaa ikiaikaista materiaaliestetiikkaa. Nykyinen kaupungistunut maisema, elinympäristö, sen arkkitehtuuri ja tilat ovat työskentelyni sisällön ja muodon lähtökohtia. Taiteellani pyrin saamaan aikaan näennäistä järjestystä ja harmoniaa hajanaisen ja tasapainottoman tilan rinnalle. Teoksissani maisemallinen horisontti muodostaa usein rauhoittavan tekijän.

In my childhood in southwest Finland the kids used to spend a lot of free time outdoors all around the year. I remember clearly the freezing ice cold winters and the soft sounds of white snowy landscapes. Finally a hot home made soup melted our frozen hands and body.

A ceramic relief out of white porcelain clay by artist Kirsi Kivivirta was chosen to be displayed at the main lobby area of the new building of Aalto University School of Business. The work on the building at Otaniemi campus was finished by the end of 2018. The name of the piece is "Stage" and its atmosphere is stage-like, as it depicts a place that will create a setting for people and ideas to encounter.
"The droplets depict interaction as well as the continuous movement of thoughts and ideas. Single droplets form paths that grow and join with others to create droplet flows. They allow people to become part of the cycle of nature, rejuvination and life force", Kivivirta describes the artwork. Unique jigsaw-like wall pieces are in centre of Kivivirta's artwork, and her previous work can be seen in Musiikkitalo and Arabianranta.
